Man Utd No2 Phelan: Youngsters are progressing well

Manchester United No2 Mike Phelan says they're pleased with the progress of their young players.

Reserve players like FA Youth Cup winners Paul Pogba, Ravel Morrison, Will and Michael Keane are up for selection against Carling Cup opponents Aldershot.

"The kids are progressing well. You get to a point where some of them want to fly and some we need to be a bit more protective with because once you expose them to a senior level situation they get judged very quickly at a club like United," Phelan told the Manchester Evening News.

"We have to be observant as to where they are at. It is still part of their learning curve. They will make mistakes but in a first-team environment those mistakes can be exaggerated. But they have to learn and learn quickly.

"We find out if they accept the good things and the not so good things. That is what we are looking for. It is also the physicality of it. You are playing against men and not boys. It is a huge challenge.

"It was surprising how well they took to the Elland Road situation. It is an intimidating atmosphere Leeds v United. They have never really played in front of that hostile environment.

"What benefited them was the blend of having older more experienced players.

"There were players in there who had points to prove as well."
