Manchester United assistant boss Mike Phelan admits Cristiano Ronaldo's goal scoring cameo against beaten Carling Cup opponents Derby was all planned.

Phelan said: "It is unusual for him to go so long without scoring.

"If we had a plan, it was to get Cristiano onto the pitch and hopefully get him to score a goal.

"From that point of view it worked for us. It was his first penalty for a while.

"That's good for him and we hope now his confidence will be up there again."
