Man Utd new boy Schweinsteiger dismisses Beckenbauer claims

Manchester United new boy Bastian Schweinsteiger has bitten back at Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer for suggesting he wouldn't be able to perform in the Premier League.

Schweinsteiger, who played for Bayern for 13 years, has hit out at Beckenbauer´s criticism that he is too old to play at the highest level in England.

The German captain said: "I don´t know when Beckenbauer moved to play in America, but I am only 30 and I am confident I can adjust to the Premier League."

Despite having missed a lot of action for Bayern last season, Schweinsteiger thinks that his injury woes are behind him and he will be able to help United challenge for the Premier League title.

He added: "It is a challenge for me to prove I can do it here. And I feel very good. I had my knee trouble after the World Cup finals last year – which was a very intensive tournament for me – and I had a break until the end of October. But from that time on I had no injuries and I was fit to the end of the season."

The 30-year-old refuses to accept Beckenbauer´s taunts that his best days are behind him, stating: "I've come here to add my qualities to the team and win titles."
