Manchester United have made fresh enquiries with Lassana Diarra.
The midfielder is available from Marseille for the €10 million fine Lokomotiv Moscow are demanding from him.
Diarra has interest from China, but Foot Mercato says United have made contact.
The veteran is viewed by United boss Jose Mourinho as a potential replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin.
Diarra played for Mourinho at both Chelsea and Real Madrid.
He has been ordered to pay a €10m (£6.8m) fine to former club Lokomotiv Moscow for breach of contract by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The French international was also hit with a 15-month ban and a salary suspension, both of which he has already served.
