Man Utd, Liverpool rival Real Madrid for James Rodriguez

Manchester United and Liverpool are being linked with AS Monaco midfielder James Rodriguez. The Daily Express says Rodriguez, who helped himself to six goals and two assists in Brazil, is believed to have his heart set on a move to Champions League winners Real Madrid, but Louis Van Gaal and Brendan Rodgers are keen to offer him an alternative path.

Reports in Spain claim that Madrid have struck a verbal agreement with the player's agent, and it is now down to the La Liga giants to negotiate a fee with Monaco.

Real's move for Rodriguez will only happen if they are able to sell Angel Di Maria, who also a target for Man Utd.

The Red Devils could prefer to sign Rodriguez due to his age and versatility in midfield, and after the club struck a record £750million kit deal with Adidas, Van Gaal has the funds to make the move happen.
