Man Utd legend Stepney praises De Gea for fighting back

Manchester United hero Alex Stepney has been impressed with the way David De Gea has established himself over the past 12 months.

De Gea was on the brink of being dropped by former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson last January, but is now firmly the club's outright No1.

Stepney told the Manchester Evening News: "It's not easy coming from the Spanish league to the Premier League at that young age.

"He had to learn very quickly. He had his knocks and his hard times. I go back to his first season when Sir Alex Ferguson left him out. When he got his place back there was no looking back. Sometimes it does you the world of good to be left out.

"You've got to get back in and prove to people that you are No. 1."
