Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says it's madness for Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to rest Steven Gerrard.
He explained in the London Evening Standard: "Steven Gerrard should have started on Tuesday night for Liverpool against Real Madrid. Being rested for such a big game will be a new experience for him, although he was not the only first-choice Liverpool player left out.
"I recognise Rodgers had a run of three games in eight days but if he could not play Gerrard in all of them then it should have been Saturday's game at Newcastle that he missed. The problem is that Gerrard does not have the players around him to allow his own playing time to be managed.
"Liverpool's squad are not strong enough to allow Gerrard the rest that he needs, even taking into account the performance in Madrid from a mainly second string XI.
"Once again we go back to Liverpool's signings in the summer. They did not recruit well enough."
