Man Utd legend Scholes brands English youngsters 'soft'

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says young English players are soft. Scholes believes the stereotypical local player is "mollycoddled".

He told the London Evening Standard: "We were mopping floors and cleaning boots. We were at Old Trafford sometimes until 11.30pm cleaning boots after first-team games. But the way the world is now, these kids aren't allowed to do it. They're mollycoddled. That is probably a little bit why we are not producing tough footballers these days.

"You see all the foreign players coming over. Our lads, I just don't think they are tough enough. To be a footballer you don't have to be tough all the time, there are different attributes.

"Academy players are picked up and taken to school, picked up and taken to the training ground. They have everything done for them. I am not saying it is the right thing but I used to meet Nicky [Butt] and we would get three buses to the Cliff training ground [United's former base]. Just to get to training for 9am and the same on the way home as well.

"I think we were a little bit more streetwise. These days kids get a bit too much done for them. They are not allowed to mop floors, not allowed to clean boots. Where's the grounding for them? Just seems like the only thing they are interested in is a little bit of money and a nice car.

"It's ridiculous."
