Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel feels David De Gea can be a great Reds No1.

The Dane feels de Gea can rival Manchester City keeper Joe Hart.

“Joe Hart has bags and bags of talent,” said Schmeichel to the Manchester Evening News. “One of the reasons City are number one in the country at the moment is because of Joe.

“I feel really sorry for de Gea. He's a young lad with bags of talent, yet first and foremost people want to have a dig at him, and a dig at the manager – they use him as a tool to do that with.

“It speaks volumes for de Gea's character that he has come through it with some cracking saves against Norwich.

“There's no doubt about it in my mind that he's a great goalkeeper.

“I find it amazing that people are making parallels to my beginning at Old Trafford. Sure, I had a difficult time but I had five clean sheets in my first five games.

“It was a different time, and a different team.

“I was one of the first foreign players coming in to the Premier League. But you didn't have Twitter then, people didn't have a way of a very personal level of criticism.

“I'm disappointed on behalf of de Gea and the criticism he has had because I thought in this country you give everybody a chance.

“But he's come through that challenge really well and I like what I see there now in his game.”
