Former Middlesbrough boss Bryan Robson is being linked with Newcastle United.
The Daily Express says Manchester United legend Robson could take charge at Newcastle, as they aim to follow Chelsea's lead with a short-term appointment that will steer them clear of the relegation zone.
Doubts persist that Joe Kinnear will return, as he faces a heart by-pass operation, and a Newcastle source said: "With Joe unwell, Mike Ashley is looking at alternative arrangements and Robson is the leading contender."
