Manchester United legend Bryan Robson is confident Liverpool ace Steven Gerrard can handle the England captaincy.

Gerrard replaces Rio Ferdinand after the Manchester United defender suffered a knee injury on Friday which rules him out of the World Cup.

Robson is confident Gerrard has the ability to lead the team on the biggest stage.

"He definitely does," said Robson. "He's proved that with Liverpool. He's been England captain before.

"For me, I feel that if Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard are at the top of their game then England have got a great chance of doing very well at this World Cup, so hopefully being captain just might inspire Steve to get to his best form."
