Man Utd legend Neville slams Everton winger Mirallas for "despicable" act

Manchester United legend Gary Neville slammed Kevin Mirallas after Everton's stalemate with West Bromwich Albion.

Mirallas missed a first-half penalty, having grabbed the ball and taken the kick after the briefest of discussions with regular taker Leighton Baines, who had scored 15 of his 16 Premier League spot-kicks.

"What he's done there at 0-0, taking it off the major penalty taker, which is what it looks like has happened, is a despicable breach of team spirit," Neville said.

"To go against team orders, you do not do that.

"I was trying to think of something that's worse than that on the pitch, that you're letting your team-mates down: giving goals away, making mistakes, getting sent off - all those things happen, they happen in football.

"But going against a team order, to selfishly act on the pitch by taking something off a specialist. It really makes it difficult if he has done that."

He added: "At 0-0, in such a crucial match where both teams are fighting for points, it's unacceptable."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher added: "It doesn't matter how well you're playing, you don't take a penalty off the penalty taker.

"It's a shocking decision. And now that they haven't gone on and won, it makes it worse."
