Ince won two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, a League Cup, the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the European Super Cup during his time at Old Trafford. Despite his six successful years at United, Ince never felt an outsider when he joined Liverpool in 1997.
He told The Sun: “It’s not as though I moved directly from one club to the other. I joined Inter Milan before coming back to this country.
“I have nothing but good memories of my time at Old Trafford and Anfield.
“To be part of the first United team to win the title for 26 years is something I will always treasure, especially as Sir Matt Busby was still alive to witness it.
“I never wanted to leave United. Despite their history, it was the opportunity to play along side Bryan Robson that was the major incentive for me.
“I remember scoring a winner against Liverpool with a header past David James.
“And I got a last-minute equaliser for Liverpool against United at Anfield in front of the Kop — another memory to treasure.
“I spent six years at United but only two at Anfield before Gerard Houllier sold me to Middlesbrough. OK, we won nothing during my time at Anfield but I was made the captain of the team and we honestly believed we could win the title, even though it didn’t happen.”
