Man Utd legend Charlton: Ronaldo has transformed Spanish football - Wayne can take inspiration

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton feels Cristiano Ronaldo can inspire Wayne Rooney to new heights. Charlton urges the United captain to follow the example of the Real Madrid star.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is changing the game in Spain," Charlton told the Mail on Sunday. "With all that pace and power and athleticism he is driving Real Madrid back into dominance both there and in Europe. You don't sit back playing 10-yard passes the way you're facing with this lad in your team. You go for it. I'm so glad he got his World Footballer of the Year Award. Lionel Messi is a great player, too, but Cristiano deserves the honour. He's setting football alight. He's taking us back to the way the game should be played. Magnificent player. And a committed professional.

"Sadly, even though there's been a lot of talk lately including him saying how much he loves United, I can't see it ever being possible for us to get him back here.

"But he's blazing the trail for a what a gifted lad like Wayne can achieve from his late 20s on, with dedication and that positive approach."
