Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton was proud to collect the UEFA President's award yesterday.

Charlton, one of the most celebrated footballers in the history of the game, was presented with the award by UEFA President Michel Platini before United's European Cup semi-final first leg clash with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Charlton played a staring role in United's unforgettable European Cup win in 1968 at Wembley, scoring two goals in the 4-1 win over Benfica.

The triumph came ten years after the Munich air crash, which Charlton survived.

Platini said: "It is a great privilege for me to present the UEFA President's Award to such an outstanding gentleman and ambassador for our game as Sir Bobby Charlton.

"Sir Bobby represents everything that is good about the game of football: fair play, respect and true loyalty."

Charlton said: "I am honored to receive this award from the UEFA president.

"Many of the most memorable games I have been involved in both as a player and a director have been in UEFA competitions.

"There is no doubt that the European Cup - now the UEFA Champions League - holds a special place in my heart."

Charlton played for United from 1953-73, and was part of the fabled 'holy trinity', with George Best and Denis Law, that helped to cement United legend's in the 1960s.

Former Real Madrid great Alfredo di Stefano was the previous recipient of the President's Award.

"It is a real privilege to follow one of the greatest names ever in the game," Charlton added.
