Man Utd legend Charlton backs Fulham skipper Murphy comments

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has supported Fulham captain Danny Murphy over his tackling comments.

Murphy, 33, made his point last week after a Manchester City's Nigel de Jong broke Hatem Ben Arfa's leg with a crunching challenge.

And Sir Bobby fears more players will join the Newcastle ace on the sidelines unless something is done to stamp out heavy tackles.

The Manchester United legend said: "Murphy's comments are a bit insensitive but he's a professional and he must have thought long and hard about it.

"He'll feel the brunt of other people's opinions but he has every right to say what he wants.

"A lot of people will be disappointed with him but, like him, I'm very worried about tackling.

"Some of the tackles you see now are quite frightening.

"If we were still playing with the thick leather boots of the past, people would be coming off with broken legs every week - and we can't have that.

"Sometimes the referees occasionally miss it and people think they can do it again if they get away with it.

"You can't have that as it's violent in many ways and that's not good for football."
