Manchester United legend Steve Bruce has revealed how Sir Alex Ferguson killed his World Cup dream.
Bruce, never capped by England, had the chance to play under Jack Charlton at the 1994 World Cup in America.
However, Ferguson blocked his attempt to change nationality as it would have seen him deemed a foreign player.
"At the time if you were Irish you were 'foreign' and that assimilated rule, you could have been a 'foreigner' playing for Man U," Bruce told Goals On Sunday.
"Sir Alex put the boot into that one and said 'you're not going to be foreign'. You were only allowed four or five [foreign players]."
