Man Utd keeper Van der Sar prepared to step aside

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is convinced their best form is ahead of them now that the international programme is over.

"I think it will help a lot. We've got around five months together now which can only be good for the squad," he told ManUtd.com.

"Hopefully we can keep everyone fit, but we know we've got a big enough squad to cope with a couple of injuries or suspensions if that happens."

With games coming thick and fast between now and the end of the year, the Dutch goalkeeper, who turns 38 on Wednesday, will continue to assess his fitness. Nevertheless, the veteran stopper insists he is more than ready for the challenges that lie ahead.

"I just want to play as many games as possible," he declared. "If the manager decides to give you a rest then you have to stand by that decision. But I feel really good at the moment and playing games is what it's all about."
