Manchester United have jumped ahead of Manchester City in the race for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.

The Daily Star says the main threat to United clinching the signing of the Shakhtar star in the summer is coming from Paris St-Germain – not Manchester City.

There were claims last week that City had cooled their interest in Fred, 25.

But the Premier League champions-elect are still eyeing the situation, though no longer see Fred as a priority signing.

For United boss Jose Mourinho, though, he is just that and Fred's representatives have privately confirmed that the strongest interest is coming from Old Trafford.
