Former Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney believes the England career of West Ham United's Robert Green could be over.

European Cup winner Stepney was on the bench in Mexico 1970 when Peter Bonetti endured his own World Cup nightmare against West Germany.

Bonetti was widely blamed for England's quarter-final exit 40 years ago - and never played for his country again.

Now, after his own howler against America in Rustenburg, Green is facing up to a similar fate.

"It could be the end of him," Stepney told the Sunday Express.

"It was a basic mistake and you can't do that sort of thing when you're playing for your country, especially in the World Cup."
