Manchester United have failed with an opening bid for Everton star Leighton Baines.

The Daily Star says United boss David Moyes - who officially begins work at Old Trafford on Monday - returned to his former club with an offer of around £12m for the defender.

But it was dismissed out of hand by Everton, who stressed the 28-year-old is not for sale.

The Toffees are determined to maintain that stance but it is unlikely to deter United.
