MAN UTD FOCUS: Which Red Devils youngsters are creating a buzz at Carrington?

Manchester United are renowned for developing quality footballers through their acclaimed youth academy.

Of course there is always talk of the world-famous 'Class of '92' but let's try and break that mould here by highlighting the current youth prospects running around in the well-known red with a hint of white and black.

Tribalfootball has shone the spotlight on those who are most likely to be joining the likes of Wayne Rooney, David De Gea and Michael Carrick in the senior ranks at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford

The 18-year-old has worked his way into senior calculations this season following a prolific spell with the U21s earlier in the campaign.

Rashford scored in six straight fixtures in September to net eight goals for the calendar month, following on from his 13 goals last term.

The Manchester-born forward, who loves to drop in the hole between the midfield and attack, was on the bench for Premier League fixtures with Watford and Leicester City in November which shows just how far he has come in recent times.

He scored three times in five UEFA Youth League group stage outings earlier this term including a brace against PSV Eindhoven in what was reportedly an extremely mature performance.

Rashford has the ability to produce moments of magic, as evidenced by the below free-kick in a FA Youth Cup win over Tottenham.

With captain Wayne Rooney now expected to be sidelined for up to two months, Rashford could soon get his chance under Louis van Gaal considering he has already been so close to stepping out for the first team.

The fact he has even made the senior bench is remarkable when you consider that he only made his full U21s debut for Warren Joyce earlier this week.

In the meantime, as Rashford awaits his first-team opportunity, you can enjoy a special highlights package dedicated to the talented youngster who is expected to be a regular fixture at Old Trafford for years to come.

Demetri Mitchell

19-year-old winger Mitchell has seen his progress restricted this season due to an injury sustained early in the campaign which followed on from his fitness woes in 2014/15.

Prior to that, however, the tricky speedster showed how much talent his has in his locker with some big performances for United's U18s, including a stunning goal against Bayern Munich.

But that was around four years ago now and the left-sided wide man has to continue progressing in order to live up to the Ryan Giggs tag that has been placed on him, perhaps unfairly.

Mitchell has a penchant for the spectacular but must find substance on a consistent basis if he is to really worry the senior team wingers like Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard.

A set-piece specialist who has almost equal ability with both feet (strange for a left-footer), there is an enormously high opinion of Mitchell at Carrington, so much so, that there were rumours of a possible loan move to a Championship club in January.

However, he remained with the Red Devils and will now strive to make a positive impact in the last few months of the season as league-leading United chase the Barclays U21 Premier League title.

Callum Gribbin

There is such a high opinion of this kid that United's crosstown rivals Manchester City made an offer to him recently.

However, the attacking midfielder turned it down in order to stay with the Red Devils and continue progressing through the ranks.

Some reports suggest City were willing to pay the teenager £11,000-a-week so for him to stay put and commit himself to United says something of his loyalty.

His versatility across the attacking lines, in the fact he can be deployed as a forward, a winger or a central midfielder, would be attractive to his coaches and his ability to create as a playmaking No. 10 with a hint of an attacking No. 8 makes him a very intriguing prospect indeed.

Gribbin, 18, was the key playmaker for the U18s last season and managed to work his way into the U21 side of which he is now an integral member despite his youth.

Newly-appointed Academy chief Nicky Butt was full of praise for the Salford-born Gribbin after he scored a lovely free-kick against PSV in September in the same game as Rashford's double.

“Callum is a confident lad and he's good at free-kicks," said Butt.

“He's scored a few this season already. He's very confident and both Marcus and him are more than capable of putting the ball in the net and he was delighted with that one."

Additionally, Paul McGuinness - who left his role at United a week ago - spoke of Gribbin's abilities at the culmination of last season, indicating the young gun will take the English by storm in the not too distant future.

"Callum's a very talented player and the type English football does not have a lot of," McGuinness told ManUtd.com.

"He can keep the ball with people around him. He can manipulate it and give space for a creative pass. Also, he's waiting to look for a creative pass all the time too.

"Other parts of his game are improving as well, his work-rate is better and he's winning the ball back better. He has had a dramatic rise really in this team and it's really helped develop him to be forced into those situations."

The future holds plenty for Gribbin, as you can see by his skill set below:

There is plenty of fanfare regarding Gribbin on social media which indicates that United fans are extremely excited about what this supreme talent will bring to the Theatre of Dreams in years to come.

Just ask former England youth coach Kenny Swain.

“I heard about Gribbs through our scouting network and everyone would say, 'You have to see this lad, he is similar to this player, or that player," he said.

“Then I'd go and look at him, then within five minutes, you can see that this boy is something special."

And then there was also this:

Tim Fosu-Mensah

The Dutch centre-back has had an enormous impact at Carrington since arriving from Ajax in the summer of 2014.

Fosu-Mensah, 18, is most comfortable in the heart of defence but is becoming equally adept at performing in a central midfield role.

Just 12 months after he arrived at United, U21s coach Joyce had this to say on ManUtd.com about Fosu-Mensah: "He is a footballer.

"If you're looking for footballers, you've got to look at what their real strengths are.

"We've got to hone his strengths as well so he ultimately he can be selected for the first team."

United Youth Historian Tony Park told FullTime Devils in June last year that Fosu-Mensah 'is a really excellent player'.

Park added: “He can play midfield, he can play centre-half. He's come in from Ajax and excelled in virtually every game. This guy is a monster."

He managed to produce this late last year as well:

Fosu-Mensah signed a three-year deal with the Red Devils in October 2015 which highlights the faith the hierarchy has in the Holland U17 international.

Some youth team observers have touted him to become a powerful box-to-box midfielder who can slot into defence with ease when called upon.

This attributes make him a rare specimen and will sure to have the next United manager, once van Gaal departs, including him in first team activities especially if he continues to endear himself to senior players.

And to cap it off, here's a little of Fosu-Mensah's best:

The word 'colossus' has been used frequently when attempting to describe Fosu-Mensah. Expect to see him playing senior football somewhere soon, whether it be with United or out on loan.

Indy Boonen

With a name similar to an American explorer, this Belgian talent joined United this past summer after trialling successfully with the famous club.

Boonen arrived from Genk and was immediately taken in by fellow countrymen Marouane Fellaini and Adnan Januzaj.

An attacking midfielder with a strong eye for goal, 17-year-old Boonen rejected Arsenal in favour of penning a three-year contract with United according to his father Jacky who played professionally for Lierse, Beveren, Lokeren and Dundee.

Boonen Snr told Belgian media in September last year: “Indy first went on trial with Salzburg, Manchester United were the second club.

Arsenal, Feyenoord, Wolfsburg and Basel were also after him; Ajax had also shown an interest.

“But Indy always wanted to join Manchester United and after his week-long trial period he called me and said, 'I want to play football here'."

Boonen is being treated with kid gloves having spent some time with the U16 side earlier this season but has been amongst the action for the U18s more recently and is tracking along nicely according to many United youth blogs.

He scored early in his U18s career with a fine volley against Middlesbrough where he linked up with teen prodigy Angel Gomes.

See the goal below. Quality stuff.

Angel Gomes

This kid is so good that former Red Devils defender Clayton Blackmore believes he could step into the first team now.

Gomes, one of the club's most exciting prospects, is destined for the top and according to Blackmore.

“There is a lad coming through called Angel Gomes, who could play tomorrow. I think he's that good," Blackmore told Play With A Legend.

“He's got an old head on his shoulders as well. He's good enough to be in the first team now but it's going to take him a year or two before everybody trusts him.

“A lot could happen in those two years, so hopefully he's going to still be there and play in the first team soon."

As a 15-year-old, Gomes was able to produce a goal such as this only last month.

The cousin of former United winger Nani, Gomes debuted for the U18s at the tender age of 14 and his Old Trafford family predecessor had alerted fans to the talents of creative midfielder by posting a photo of him on his Instagram with the accompanying message: "Follow the Man Utd next star, Angel!"

Angel, the son of former Portugal U21 international Gil Gomes, was born in England in 2000 and and has already skippered the Three Lions at U16 level.

He managed to score this goal against Derby County in November last year as well.

On Thursday, Gomes scored his first international goal for the England U16s and was absolutely delighted.

He is decent at dribbling too!

From perusing though reports and forums, it is evident that this guy could be absolutely anything!
