Southampton contract talks with Jose Fonte have collapsed.
The Sun says captain Fonte, 33 later this month, was offered a bumper £80,000-a-week deal making him Saints' highest-paid player after winning Euro 2016 with Portugal.
But the defender has so far refused to sign because Saints are unwilling to extend the contract beyond his current agreement, which expires at the end of next season.
Everton manager and ex-Saints supremo Ronald Koeman retains a keen interest in taking Fonte to Goodison Park.
Manchester United chief Jose Mourinho is also eyeing a January raid for his fellow countryman and the pair are both represented by super agent Jorge Mendes.
Fonte is Saints' longest serving player after joining from Crystal Palace in 2008 and helping the south coast side to back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League.
