Manchester United are ready to test Atletico Madrid's resolve with a bid for goalkeeper David de Gea. The Daily Mail says Sir Alex Ferguson expects Edwin van der Sar to retire at the end of the season - and the Manchester United boss has confirmed that Anders Lindegaard is unlikely to be the only goalkeeper joining the club.
Atletico would demand more than £15million for De Gea - who has also been linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona - but the club have the impressive Sergio Asenjo in place to take over when the bids become too tempting.
The 20-year-old only made his breakthrough at Atletico a year ago, but he has impressed to such an extent that he is seen as Spain's natural long-term successor to Real Madrid's outstanding Iker Casillas.
