Former Manchester United coach Mike Phelan is competing with Rene Meulensteen for the Wigan Athletic job.
The Mail on Sunday says they are on a list of 10 candidates to be interviewed by Wigan owner Dave Whelan, who hopes to appoint his man by next weekend.
He said: "I'm talking to a lot of great managers, hopefully I can choose the right one - and that's not easy."
