Chris Smalling says he feels he can complement both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the back for Manchester United.
The former Fulham defender, 20, is establishing himself at United on tour of the US.
"I've watched him over the years and how he's progressed into one of the finest," said Smalling of Ferdinand. "He just wished me luck and told me not to be afraid to play my game. I've not played too much with him, but I think we'll build up a relationship over time.
"Hopefully I can start training with him. Nemanja Vidic is coming back as well, so there are some quality centre backs to learn my trade from.
"Every young centre half picks up different traits. I like to bring out the ball, like Rio does. But, in terms of Maidstone United especially, I had to grind out some games and, physically, Vidic is one of the stand-out defenders. Hopefully I've got that in my locker as well."
