Man Utd defender Smalling happy learning from Ferdinand

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is ready to do a job for England U21 boss Stuart Pearce in Romania.

In Smalling and Blackburn centre-half Phil Jones, the England boss has the strongest of backlines.

Seeing the two play together is almost like watching Rio Ferdinand and John Terry leading the charge.

Smalling is the Rolls-Royce, a slick passing stopper, while Jones is a no-nonsense, rough throwback.

And of his new Old Trafford team-mate Smalling added: "Rio has been a real joy to be alongside.

"The stature of the guy is something to look up to. I have been lucky to play both my games for United so far alongside him.

"He has built up that presence over the years - very commanding - and gives you that composure which can glean off on to some of the younger players like me.

"Phil has also been excellent to play with.

"Hopefully we can go out there and get a clean sheet, then look forward to the tournament."
