Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand had hopes of ending his six-year exile from tournament football this summer.
Incredibly, Ferdinand has NEVER played in a European Championship finals and has not featured in any tournament since the 2006 World Cup.
He was then KO'd by a knee injury - after colliding with team-mate Emile Heskey in training - while out in South Africa for the 2010 finals.
He told The Sun: "I must admit I didn't expect 2006 would be my last competition.
"I really hoped that I would get 100 caps - but for various reasons it hasn't happened. It's a disappointment but it just shows you can never take anything for granted in football."
