Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has paid tribute to Edwin van der Sar.
The United goalkeeper will retire at the end of the season.
Ferdinand told Inside United: "He's been brilliant for United since the day he arrived. To be honest, he's changed my thinking when it comes to goalkeepers.
"If I ever become a manager, then I'll be looking for my goalkeeper to exhibit as many of Edwin's traits as possible. You need to be good with both feet and calm under pressure , which Edwin excels at.
"He's also a great communicator with his defenders. The other thing to remember is that he always performs when he's called upon. Fans see goalkeepers pulling off great saves at other clubs and think they'd love to see that player at United.
"But it's different being a goalkeeper at Manchester United than at any other club. You might only make one save in a match, but you need to be alert and focused enough to make that save when you're called into action. That's what really separates the great goalkeepers from the good ones."
