Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand says Manchester City's challenge was inevitable this season.

Their challenge is an inevitable result of the petrodollars flowing from Sheik Mansour, says Ferdinand.

"They've spent so much money, I don't think their owners will be sitting there saying, 'Oh, they're punching above their weight'," he told the Mail on Sunday. "You spend all that money, you'd expect to be top of the league."
