Ferdinand laid into England's dismal international record, insisting the time had come for a complete overhaul of the game in this country.
He said: "Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board and have a real good look at ourselves.
"Right from the bottom all the way to the top, in terms of the coaching and the way we bring our players through and how we're getting ready to play and prepare in tournaments because, up until now, we've not been able to find the right remedy.
"It hasn't happened since 1966 but it's not for the want of trying and the effort we put in.
"For some reason we haven't been able to get beyond the quarter-finals of major finals.
"Whether it's a mental thing or tiredness at times due to the gruelling Premier League season, or that we're just not good enough, that's what we're still trying to search for."
