Man Utd defender Ferdinand assured over England captaincy

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has been assured his England captaincy is safe.

The Sunday Mirror says Ferdinand will retain the England captaincy if he proves his fitness for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales.

The Manchester United star faces a race against time to be fit for the clash at the Millennium Stadium on March 26. He has been sidelined since injuring his calf during a warm-up prior to the 2-1 defeat by Wolves at Molineux on the February 5 but is likely to make his comeback against Bolton next weekend.

Boss Fabio Capello has been considering a controversial u-turn to hand the armband back to bad-boy John Terry who was stripped of the captaincy in February following revelations of the defender's alleged affair with Vanessa Perroncel - but any move to restore him as skipper would spark a major rift inside the England camp.
