Manchester United coach Phil Neville admits his disastrous Euro2000 strengthened his Faith.
After conceding the penalty against Romania that sent England crashing out of Euro 2000, the then-Manchester United ace was subjected to extraordinary levels of abuse from fuming fans.
Neville tells his emotional story in the extended collector's edition of 'The Class of '92' - the film which charts the rise of Ryan Giggs & Co at United - which is out tomorrow on DVD.
Neville, who won 59 caps for the Three Lions from 1996 to 2007, said: "I got publicly abused - and I found it really difficult.
"My wife came home one day from work and the gates were on fire with an England flag on top of it.
"And then when you take your wife out for a romantic meal, go to the toilet and someone threatens to punch your lights out, you have to go straight home.
"It affected me so much. It knocked my confidence and I needed to get some kind of happiness from football back into my life.
"So, I started to pray before matches. I prayed that I'd make my wife, my children, my mum, my dad, my sister and my brother proud for what they were seeing from me on the pitch.
"That's what I did. And I said the same prayer every week for the rest of my career."
