Manchester United academy boss Brian McClair says success in the Champions League over the last two seasons has helped the players grow.
In a column for The Sun, former United and Celtic striker McClair wrote: "Perhaps that point came in the penalty shoot-out in Moscow or when United became the first English team to win at Porto.
"Both of those huge events prove that, where as in the past we may have struggled to get over the finish line, we now have the ability to overcome. Porto proved our toughest test on the road to Rome. They scored early on at Old Trafford and that made things very difficult for us.
"We did the same to Arsenal at Highbury. It happens. We went to Portugal, controlled the game and scored the crucial goal. We overcame.
"In a sense we have an advantage over a lot of our opponents in Europe. Our players have done it; run the course all the way to the final and won. It gives them extra belief and, of course, huge amounts of experience playing against the best in high pressure situations. The players have also had a millstone lifted from around their necks."
