Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay. The Uruguay international is under consideration at United as a long-term successor for Rio Ferdinand.

O Jogo says United chief scout Martin Ferguson was in the stands to watch Garay in action against Beira-Mar.

Also of interest to Ferguson was Garay's teammate Nicolas Gaitan, who has been a long-term target for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
