Manchester United chief David Gill insists they're capable of competing at the top end of the market.
Gills says there's money available for a major signing.
He was asked if United could compete with their neighbours if a player like Real Madrid's Kaka became available.
Gill said: "If we wanted to. Over time, if you follow Manchester United, you will know we have rarely bought the world star.
"We have made them world stars by playing for United and that will continue."
He added: "We showed with Wayne Rooney that we will pay the appropriate amount to keep players."
