Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to step down at the end of the season has only intensified United's determination to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford this summer.

The Daily Mail says its emerged that outgoing United chief executive David Gill has been in Madrid to meet Jorge Mendes, the Portuguese super-agent who represents Ronaldo.

Sources on Wednesday night insisted United are confident of securing the return of the player they sold to Real Madrid for a world record £80million in 2009.
