United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been a long time admirer of the Slovakia captain, who has enjoyed an outstanding campaign this season.
Il Mattino says United had scouts posted at Napoli's victory over AS Roma on Saturday to see Hamsik in action.
It's been revealed Chelsea representatives were also in the stands for the Azzurri's 2-0 triumph.
