United boss Louis van Gaal is eager to find a new defensive signing in January.
The Daily Mail says United have been scouting defenders recently to keep on top of the market. They have watched Aleksandar Dragovic of Dynamo Kiev, Fabian Schar of Basle and Ezequiel Garay of Zenit while Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar remains a possibility as his contract runs out in the summer.
United may be forced to try and sign a player from that group should their injury crisis fail to subside.
