Man Utd can handle Ferguson retirement, insists Gill

Manchester United will be able to handle manager Sir Alex Ferguson's eventual retirement, says chief executive David Gill.

Fergie, who will celebrate his 70th birthday on New Year's Eve, marks a quarter of a century as United boss in November.

Chief executive Gill says there have been no talks about a retirement date and no discussions about who will take over.

United were relegated within four years of Sir Matt Busby stepping down but Gill said: "There won't be meltdown.

"I've said before we don't know when Sir Alex will retire and long may he continue.

"What we're trying to do is make sure we get the quality of the team and the age profile correct, so the new manager coming in - whoever that might be - has the nucleus of a world-class team.

"Clearly the new manager will have his own ideas and will want to change two or three players.

"But if he wants to change 12 or 13, he probably won't be the right manager for Manchester United."
