Incoming Manchester United boss David Moyes admits Liverpool legend Ian Rush almost stopped his management career before it started.
The road which took him to Everton and now Manchester United might never have been travelled.
Moyes said: "I was player-coach and then player-assistant manager at Preston. When the manager's job came up they were talking about Ian Rush or Joe Royle.
"The chairman, Bryan Gray, offered me the job but I didn't take it at first. I said, 'Why don't you see how it goes?'
"At that time the fans wanted Ian or Joe. They didn't want David Moyes.
"I didn't want to take the job if the supporters had thought they wanted them.
"Bryan wanted me to do it right away but I think we waited about six or seven weeks. I didn't get a few victories for a while but it felt right and then it went in the right direction."
