Man Utd boss Moyes: De Gea success great triumph for Ferguson

Manchester United boss David Moyes says Sir Alex Ferguson deserves great credit for backing David de Gea. Ferguson refused to condemn his keeper in a show of solidarity which has been evident since he signed him.

And Moyes is delighted to have inherited the legacy. The Scot said: "I always thought that when you put in a young goalkeeper you run the risk that he will make mistakes.

"I thought Sir Alex, to put in a young keeper at United who at times did make mistakes, was incredibly brave.

"He stuck with him and brought him in and out at the right times when he thought it was necessary. They have managed him great.

"There are very few teams who have young goalkeepers. We have a young one and he will get better and better.

"He's come through a lot of things. Goalkeepers will always make mistakes. It's part of their job and they are noticeable.

"David has done really well. He had a great save for us the other night when we were winning four or five-nil against Bayer Leverkusen.

"I think overall he has grown in stature. He has got bigger, he is confident and has played really well. I think he's able to handle it.

"He copes with situations much better than he did do. But that comes with age as well.

"He's maturing and hopefully the best years are still to come."
