Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has asked his agent Jorge Mendes about James Rodriguez.
James has rebuilt his career this season at Bayern Munich on-loan from Real Madrid and is expected to be signed permanently by the Germans at the end of this season.
However, Don Balon says Mourinho aims to intervene with an attempt to bring the Colombia captain to England.
The United manager has made it clear to James - via Mendes - that he wants him at Old Trafford in recent days.
For his part, James is unsettled at Bayern. While he's enjoyed his football this season, the decision for coach Jupp Heynckes to step down and be replaced by Niko Kovac has him concerned.
The midfielder fears Kovac's system won't suit his game and has expressed his concern to Mendes - which has since reached Mourinho.
Bayern are expected to seek to sign James permanently for €40m in June.
