Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho made a serious attempt to prise Raphael Varane away from Real Madrid this summer, it has been revealed.

Radio Cope says Mourinho was keen to link up again with Varane.

They report Mourinho attempted to sign the Frenchman over the summer, offering him double his Real Madrid wages to make the move.

But Varane turned him down following conversations with Real boss Zinedine Zidane, preferring to stay at the Bernabeu and fight for his place.

Varane worked under Mourinho during their time together at Real Madrid.
