Jose Mourinho believes he has already made a legacy for himself.

The Manchester United manager became one of the very first Portuguese coaches to leave his homeland and try his luck elsewhere in Europe.

Mourinho, 54, was a trailblazer when he left his coaching job at FC Porto to take up the assistant manager's role under Sir Bobby Robson at Barcelona back in 1996, before heading back to Portugal to manage Benfica, Uniao de Leiria and Porto.

The 2004 UEFA Champions League title with Porto followed before he made the huge plunge to England by joining Chelsea, and subsequently Inter Milan, Real Madrid and United.

And the rest, they say, is history…

In an interview with GQ, Mourinho was asked of his legacy.

“I have a big legacy," he said.

“But there is one thing that's really important to me: I changed the life of Portuguese managers.

“After 2004, when I started conquering my space in the world of football, the Portuguese managers started to have something they never had, a little bit of credibility, a little bit of opportunity. The doors opened.

“Now they are all over the world. This is my legacy.

“After that, we could discuss it in terms of my methodology, a new direction in terms of coaching, but the door opened when I went to England, Spain and Italy with success.

“This is more important to me than the results."
