Man Utd boss LVG praises Rooney for giving up penalty

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal had no problem with Wayne Rooney handing penalty duties to Javier Hernandez in midweek.

Rooney, already having scored a hat-trick, handed the ball to Hernandez for the penalty the Mexican missed at Club Brugge.

Van Gaal said he approved of the gesture, designed to boost Hernandez's confidence with a goal from the spot — but only because the game was already won, with United 4-0 up.

“I am not surprised, because Wayne is a sociable guy," he added. “It's unbelievable. He's a real captain. We cannot do it at 0-0 but, at 4-0, it was a great gesture."
