Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is struggling to find a successor for Edwin van der Sar.
The News of the World says Ferguson has failed to identify an outstanding candidate to justify spending big money this summer.
Fergie and his backroom staff checked on Schalke's Manuel Neuer, but they have cooled on the German No1, believing he looked shaky during the World Cup.
France international Hugo Lloris and Sebastien Frey of Fiorentina have also been repeatedly watched, but Sir Alex is refusing to be rushed on a decision, despite van der Sar being set to turn 40 in October.
