Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is determined for Wayne Rooney to be fit for their biggest games.
According to a source close to the club, Ferguson has made no bones about his view that Rooney's commitment to England and the World Cup are of secondary importance.
"As far as the manager is concerned, Rooney is a United player first and an England one second," the source told the Mail on Sunday.
After missing training for most of the week, Rooney had a workout on Friday but was said to have picked up another minor injury - a bruised foot - in a further session yesterday morning.
That was enough for the boss to decide that it was not worth the risk ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final clash with Bayern Munich in Germany.
