Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson insists Wesley Sneijder was not lined up to replace Paul Scholes.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson insists Wesley Sneijder was not lined up to replace Paul Scholes.

The Inter Milan midfielder was keen to move to Old Trafford, but the switch fizzled out.

"Sneijder is not the ideal replacement for Scholes," said Ferguson.

"He is a fantastic player, but not what we were looking for. Only [Barcelona's] Xavi and Iniesta can be compared to Scholes," said the coach.
