Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted with Chris Smalling's performance in the 0-0 draw at Marseille.
Smalling again impressed in the absence of Rio Ferdinand.
"Chris Smalling was excellent again," said Ferguson.
"The boy is improving all the time. He wants to be a player and he likes defending. He gave a tremendous demonstration of centre-back play."
